When the words loose their meanings, it is because of their speaker looses his authority.
The proper restoration of their meaning would not require a return to some other authorities. These other authorities would be expected to fail again in establishing firm meanings to the words.
Rather, it will be the case of following the roots of the words in the things they name. Such an enterprise would avoid the authority, and, from this reason, it will accept the free floating of meanings. However, this new lack of firmness presupposes a general firm framework, which is the world of real things.
Therefore, the uncertain meanings of the words might not be caused by the problems of their speakers, but by the inquiries in the world of real things. Nonetheless, the inquiries are often performed by imposing the authority of methods.
